While everything will wear out eventually and need replacement, there are a few steps you can take to minimize the wear and tear on your car and reduce the likelihood of unexpected repair bills.

1. Change your oil at the recommended interval
One of the most important maintenance tasks you can perform is regular oil and filter changes. If you put more demands on your vehicle by spending most of your time in stop and go traffic, towing a trailer, or driving in dusty conditions, changing the oil every 3000 miles is good insurance.

It’s also important to check your oil at least every couple of weeks if the car is being driven daily. Lack of oil will cause the engine and gaskets to overheat, leading to expensive repairs.

2. Consider using synthetic oil
Synthetic oil is more significantly more expensive than regular oil. Synthetic oil does a superior job of preventing premature wear, sludge buildup, and overheating. Synthetic blends are also a good choice if you want reduce the cost of an oil change. Whatever oil you use be sure that it is the correct weight for your engine.

3. Improve your driving habits
If you drive your car like it’s a race car, accelerating and braking hard and taking turns at high speeds you will wear out your tires, shocks and engine much sooner. Driving more gently will save on gas and extend the lifespan of the car.

4. Get regular tune ups
Did you know the average car has tens of thousands of moving parts? A tune up and inspection will catch the minor problems that could lead to expensive repair bills down the road. Small maintenance tasks like replacing fuel filters, air filters, spark plugs, belts, hoses, and fluids are quick and inexpensive to perform compared to rebuilding an engine or transmission.

5. Keep your tires properly inflated
Maintaining correct tire pressure not only reduces fuel waste, it prevents premature wear and tear of the tires and suspension while improving braking and handling.
